ITALIC – Getting Out of the Rut
Description
Are you bored with your formal Italic yet are not sure how to liven it up successfully? Do you feel stuck in a rut and want to free yourself from the tyranny of that 45 degree pen angle that you first learned? This weekend workshop will open your eyes to many "faces" of Italic, for, using the principles of making variations on a basic alphabet. Italic is capable of expressing any kind of atmosphere or feeling, probably more than any other style of formal broad-pen calligraphy. We will begin by re-visiting and improving our basic style then explore the underlying principles of making variations and how to express different moods.

Instructor Profile
A graduate of the Medway College of Art in Kent in 1948, noted calligrapher Sheila Waters studied for her Master's degree with Dorothy Mahoney (assistant to the great pioneer, Edward Johnston) at the Royal College of Art, London. Following graduation in 1951, at twenty-two, Sheila was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and began a career devoted to commissions for royalty, museums, libraries, collectors and publishers, and some part-time art school teaching. While still a student, Sheila began her museum studies, being privileged to work from rare, valuable manuscripts. These studies have been at the core of her understanding and the development of her precise techniques. A gifted teacher, Sheila has shared her expertise with calligraphers the world over.
She inaugurated the calligraphy program at the Smithsonian Institution, after immigrating to the U.S. with her family in 1971, when her late husband, Peter Waters, became Chief of Conservation at the Library of Congress. She later developed her own private classes and workshops, and has traveled to teach for calligraphy societies in the USA and abroad since 1978. Her oldest of three sons, Julian Waters, is also a world-renowned lettering designer.
Sheila was the first president and first honorary member of the Washington Calligraphers Guild, and was included in the 1981 World Who's Who of Women. Her work is included in most of the important books that have been published about calligraphy. Her own text book, "Foundations of Calligraphy" was published in 2006 by John Neal, Bookseller.
